After last year's Senior Day disaster, the Augusta State women celebrated their finest regular-season finale Saturday.

The Lady Jaguars pounded Georgia Southwestern, 104-55, at Christenberry Fieldhouse. Then the news got better.

Augusta State later learned of Clayton State's win at Peach Belt Conference leader Francis Marion.

That gave the Lady Jaguars a share of the league's regular-season title, their first conference championship since the 1994-95 season.

"It almost makes me want to cry, because we know how hard we've worked," Lady Jaguars senior guard Sonya Jackson said. "We know how many chances we've had. It makes me very emotional. It makes me want to cry right now."

Augusta State senior guard Deo Ngulela added: "This is the best Senior Day. Every senior wishes they could be in this situation."

The Lady Jaguars finished the regular season at 19-8 overall, 13-7 in conference play. Augusta State, Clayton State, Francis Marion and Lander all tied for first place in the Peach Belt. That number could swell to five if USC Aiken (19-7, 12-7) wins at Georgia College & State today.

Augusta State's win over Georgia Southwestern marked quite a turnaround from last season. In 2007, the Lady Jaguars got upset in overtime by Georgia Southwestern on Senior Day. It was the Lady Canes' first conference win, and it remains their only league win.

"Was there any time we didn't talk about last year's game?" Augusta State coach Greg Wilson asked rhetorically. "We just didn't show up that day. I reminded them enough."

The Lady Jaguars, who shot a season-high 58 percent from the field, responded with the most points in Wilson's nine-year tenure.

"We actually did what we're supposed to do on offense and played a little defense, also," Jackson said.

Led by Ngulela's season-high 20 points, Augusta State had seven scorers in double figures. Brittany Jarrard, Porsha White and Sherika Parker each recorded 11 points, while Jackson, Jasmine Godwin and Tracey Paschal each had 10.

Georgia Southwestern, which opened the season with a win over Clark Atlanta, finished with a 26-game losing streak. The Lady Canes also closed conference play at 0-20.
