United Way on the Gold standard
Letter to the Editor
Thursday, March 01, 2007

I have had the privilege of being involved with the United Way of the CSRA for 25 years as both a volunteer and a member of the staff. I know firsthand how efficiently it is operated. More importantly, I know that I can give one gift each year, and it will help many, many different types of individuals and families through a variety of excellent community agencies.

This week, United Way held its annual meeting and celebrated the achievement of its 2006 campaign of more than $4.4 million. It was a great event because it honored the many corporations and individuals who unite each year to help our community.

Sitting demurely at the head table was LaVerne Gold, United Way's new area president and CEO. What a joy for me to see our community's premier charity being led by someone so competent and compassionate. Leadership is hard to define, but you know it when you experience it. Ms. Gold has been a member of the United Way staff for 28 years. I have had the pleasure of working with her as a volunteer and a co-worker. She is known throughout the community for her ability to build partnerships between many different types of people.

What a great role model for others who aspire to community service. United Way has struck Gold!

Jo Endres Maypole, Augusta

(Editor's note: The writer is immediate past president of the United Way of the CSRA.)
