If you've got a collectible lying around the house, Harry Rinker can tell you what it's worth.

Mr. Rinker, of Collector Inspector on HGTV, is a featured speaker today through Sunday at The Augusta Home and Garden Show at James Brown Arena, 601 Seventh St..

Mr. Rinker will provide free oral appraisals of antiques and collectibles at the show, which will feature about 150 exhibitors. There will be exhibits on home and garden areas including siding, landscaping, pools and spas, sun rooms, custom playground sets, security and technology, and free wine tastings.

This is Mr. Rinker's third year at the show.

"I love the goodies! I love seeing what people have around their house,'' he said. "There are stories behind the things people bring in. They're not just random items; usually they have been passed down to them in the family or is something from their childhood," he said.

The questions he usually receives from those seeking appraisals are regarding what's considered to be an antique and how value is determined, he said.

"So many people think it has to belong to their parents or grandparents to have value. The truth is that many things that people have grown up with during the hot decades can very well have value," he said.

The "hot decades" right now are the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, Mr. Rinker said.

"Value today depends on whether there's a buyer," he said. "Old doesn't always mean that it's valuable or an antique."

One of the lectures he will give this weekend is titled Sell, Keep or Toss: How to Downsize a Home, Settle an Estate and Appraise Personal Property.

"This is a situation that every baby boomer is facing now," he said. "Children have grown up and moved away and parents no longer need a large home."
