Self-defense class stresses basics

When defending yourself against an attacker, keep it simple.

"You don't want to get too fancy with moves. Hit, kick, run and get help," said Johnny Hughes, a third-degree black belt in Kindai No karate and the head instructor of CSRA Defensive Arts in Graniteville.

On Saturday, Mr. Hughes held a free self-defense seminar at the Friedman Branch Library.

Speaking to a group that included women and men, he emphasized that stances and moves often seen in movie fights aren't typical of what happens on the street.

Knowing fundamental moves could make a difference, though.

"You don't choose to be a victim, but you can choose whether or not you're going to stay a victim," he told the group. "Use what you have and what you know to get yourself out of the situation as quickly as possible. Hit, kick, punch -- whatever you can do -- and get away."

During the hourlong seminar, Mr. Hughes demonstrated six defensive moves, including front and side kicks, an elbow blow and a straight jab. After each demonstration, participants had the opportunity to practice the moves.

"On the street, kick belt level or below. Hit or punch in the upper body area," he said as the participants practiced. "Keep in mind: Closest weapon, closest target."

He advised women especially to scream "No!" if they are being attacked.

"The scream adds adrenaline and makes your hits stronger. It also says 'No, I'm not going to stay a victim,' " he said.

Mr. Hughes also gave safety tips to participants.
