Mark Maund raised a few eyebrows in August when he announced the United Way of the CSRA was not setting a fundraising goal for its annual campaign.

The local campaign still almost matched the previous year's level, it was announced Tuesday at the organization's annual meeting.

"Our vision was to raise as much money as possible," said Mr. Maund, the 2007 campaign chairman.

The United Way raised $4,321,409 in 2007, compared with $4,416,203 in 2006. Part of the total, $720,766, comes from the Combined Federal Campaign in which donors working at federal sites such as Fort Gordon designate their funds to a charity of their choice from a book containing several thousand agencies.

The 2006 CFC raised $872,261. Because most of the charities in the CFC are not local, the $150,000 difference in the CFC campaign means more money will stay in the Augusta area, officials said.

In 2007, the United Way funded 60 community programs, said Cheryl Cheek, board chairwoman. The 211 information and referral service received more than 10,000 calls. More than 4,000 donors received Caring Club card, which provides discounted services from 43 merchants with an annual donation of $120.

The organization received a record number of grants, including a three-year renewable federal grant for 13 Americorps VISTA members who will provide support to 11 area nonprofit groups.

The organization also honored the 2007 Alvin W. Vogtle Volunteer of the Year, J. Edward Enoch Jr., who volunteers for several organizations, including the Family Y, the United Way, the CSRA Community Foundation and Golden Harvest Food Bank.

It gave the first ever the Spirit of Community Award to Electrolux, according to a news release.
