LOS ANGELES --- Diamonds and designer gowns are classic red-carpet partners -- but rarely have they gotten this close.
The Diamond Information Center invited five up-and-coming designers to join forces with jewelers to create one-of-a-kind looks.
"It's fun to have designers who are not always on the Oscar red carpet, because they're young and edgy, think about the Oscar gown," said Sally Morrison, the director of the Diamond Information Center, which promotes the industry. "This is to imagine where it could go."
Designer Libertine, known for Goth- and punk-inspired styles, came up with a black lace jacket covered in Neil Lane vintage diamond brooches. Rodarte, characterized by pretty, ladylike looks, created a pink pleated dress finished with Van Cleef & Arpels diamond butterfly brooches.
Jovovich Hawk paired a green velvet and chiffon gown with a Camille Dietz Bergeron necklace. A vintage Cartier brooch added glamour to Phillip Lim's dress, while Alabama Chanin embroidered diamond beads onto an ivory gown.
The five looks were unveiled Tuesday at a media event at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood, but none is expected on the Oscar red carpet.
"If somebody wants to wear them to the Oscars, that's fine by us," Ms. Morrison said. "They probably won't be (worn). Nobody wants to wear something anybody else has seen."
