Woman organizes protest of Burk

An Augusta group is the second organization to apply for a permit to protest Martha Burk's position against the Augusta National Golf Club.

Allison Greene, 28, organized WAMB, Women Against Martha Burk. She said her 20-member group will show Ms. Burk that not all Augusta women support her fight against the Augusta National's all-male membership.

The protest will be at noon April 6 at Reynolds Street near the Boll Weevil Cafe on Ninth Street, where Mrs. Greene is the general manager.

Though she plans a "light-hearted" demonstration, she says, she wants Ms. Burk to realize the Masters Tournament's positive impact.

"I don't have a problem with the (membership)," Mrs. Greene said Saturday. "Economically, the Masters is major for us and it's fun. I'm angry that someone's trying to take that from us. She doesn't speak for all women."

WAMB has two male members, Mrs. Greene said.

Earlier this month, Tampa, Fla., resident Todd Manzi also applied for a protest permit from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office. He runs two anti-Burk Web sites, including TheBurkStopsHere.com.

Ms. Burk, the chairwoman of the National Council of Women's Organizations, responded to the protest plans by saying, "It's a free country. This is what a democracy is all about."

Ms. Burk has not applied for a protest permit.
