Spartans turn offense over to veteran QB

The Augusta Spartans will try to win their second game of the season Saturday at the Osceola Ghostriders, but the indoor football team will have to do so with a new quarterback.

Coach Bubba Diggs said Wednesday that Brandon Satcher, the former North Augusta standout quarterback who led the Spartans to a 49-47 victory over Daytona Beach in the season opener two weeks ago, hasn't been with the team this week because of a personal situation.

Taking over the position is indoor veteran Neil Sharma, who has played several seasons at nearly every level of the sport. He joined the team Tuesday.

"It's just a plus right now to get a veteran quarterback from the indoor game who's been around," Diggs said. "He understands the routes, the timing. He's been very, very successful and has done some good things. I did some research and talked to a lot of people, and I heard a lot of good compliments."

FOR KICKS: The Spartans also will have a new kicker, Shon Rowser, who kicked for the Raleigh Rebels of the American Indoor Football League last season. He previously played for Western Carolina.

Former Spartans kicker Josh Logan went 1-for-6 on PATs in Augusta's win over the Thunder, which prompted the change.

"He's got a strong leg," Diggs said of Rowser.

A MONTH OFF? After Saturday's game at Osceola, the Spartans won't play again until March 24 in the home opener against the Columbus Lions.

"It's kind of good and bad," Diggs said. "It'll give the guys some time to heal, but it'll be like preseason all over. We'll take a couple weeks off, and I think that'll give some of the guys who have never played the indoor game before a chance to see it even more, a chance to check out some opponents.

"We definitely want to get that 'W' (Saturday) and be in good standing when we get back," he said.

NEW DIGS: Former Spartans general manager Robby Wells, who worked with the team for most of the 2006 season, has been hired as the defensive coordinator at Benedict College in Columbia.

The former South Carolina State defensive coordinator was in the running for Benedict's head coaching position, which went to Stan Conner.

Conner hired Wells earlier this week.
