Chorale will pay tribute to black composers
The Augusta Chorale will present a heritage concert in honor of Black History Month at Paine College on Sunday.
The concert, which will feature the works of black composers, offered the chorale both an interesting opportunity and a solution to a scheduling conflict.
"Usually we do a spring concert," said Ellis M. Johnson, the group's music director. "But last year we were extended an invitation to do a concert with the Augusta Choral Society and the Augusta Children's Chorale in May, which would have been the same time as our concert. I really didn't want to do two concerts at the same time. So with this we avoid the scheduling conflict and are able to present this African-American music at an appropriate time."
Mr. Johnson selected pieces that showcased not only his group's talent but also a wide variety of musical genres.
"I wanted pieces that showed the virtuosity of African-American composers," he said. "I want to present to the public a collection of songs that will show a variety of styles - from jazz to oratorios to opera to spirituals."

The concert will also feature soprano Crystal Harris. Ms. Harris has performed in some of the world's most famous opera houses, including La Scala, Opera Bastille and Teatro di Roma. Mr. Ellis said he was unaware of Ms. Harris' pedigree when he asked her to participate.
"She's a tremendous catch," he said with a laugh, "but I didn't really know that when I heard her. I didn't find out until later that she had performed in some of the major opera houses. I heard her, heard something unique in her voice. I knew I wanted to bring her here. That's all."
