The Augusta GreenJackets will announce plans today to spend this season celebrating the past two decades.
The 2008 season, which begins in six weeks, marks the 20th consecutive year of minor league baseball in Augusta.
It's a milestone that prompted a new logo from the GreenJackets.
"It's always special when you get to be part of a team that is celebrating an anniversary like the GreenJackets are this year," Augusta General Manager Nick Brown said in a statement. "It really is amazing looking at the past 20 years and how much success the team and the former players have had."
Professional baseball had a presence in Augusta as early as 1885, but the city went without a team for 25 years until the Augusta Pirates made their debut in 1988.
The Pirates team, and accompanying mascot, was changed to the GreenJackets in 1994. Eleven years later, Ripken Baseball Group purchased the team.
No matter the name or owner, the team has seen a large amount of success over the past 20 years. Along with the new logo, the team released a laundry list of accomplishments over the past two decades.
Augusta teams have seen 92 of their players advance to the Major Leagues. Fourteen of those players were on World Series championship teams, 17 of them were named Major League All-Stars, two earned Rookie of the Year honors and one was a Gold Glove winner.
Beyond individual success from minor league players in Augusta, the team also has fared well with 11 winning seasons and an overall record of 1,353-1,297. Those wins include three South Atlantic League championships and seven SAL Southern Division titles.
