Notebook from Nagano Web posted February 17, 1998
By Dennis Sodomka
Silver medalists Chris Thorpe and Gordy Sheer received $20,000
each from the United States Olympic Committee's Operation Gold program
and matching funds from the U.S. Luge Association.
Bronze medalists Mark Grimmette and Brian Martin won $15,000
each.
The Operation Gold program pays each American athlete $15,000
for gold, $10,000 for silver and $5,000 for bronze in the Olympics.
Since their historic race the four have been besieged with
requests for corporate appearances, and have sampled the nightlife of
Japan, especially the karaoke bars.
They are tentatively scheduled to appear on a taped segment of
the David Letterman show Wednesday night. They were interviewed by
Letterman's mother, Dorothy, in the Olympic Village.
Britt Swartley finished second and Eric Bergoust fourth in the qualifying round for the men while Nikki Stone was fourth for the women. The 12 men and 12 women in the finals start from scratch on Wednesday. China's Xu Nannan led all qualifiers for the women while Belorussian Dmitri Dashchinsky led the men. Bergoust described conditions as "sketchy,'' like "jumping off mashed potatoes. "I let it go in Lillehammer,'' said Stone. "I'm not letting it go here. Hopefully, I can go out there and do my job Wednesday.''
