Two of the nation's best Division II basketball teams came to town Wednesday night.
And one of them calls this town home.
The Augusta State University men's basketball team Wednesday delivered a thrilling 76-67 win over Clayton State in one of the biggest games ever at Christenberry Fieldhouse - and the only one ever to feature two nationally ranked teams.
This game was so good, so big, that one fan had to be told by security to calm down. Clayton State was ranked No. 10 coming in, and looked all of that. But the No. 16 Jaguars nearly ran away with it, ultimately settling for a win that seemed closer than the final score.
ASU's national ranking no doubt will improve with its 19-3 record - and its perfect 11-0 record atop the Peach Belt Conference is more secure today.
At 15-6, the ASU women are rockin' too - joining the men in the win column Wednesday so the two squads could sweep their opponents for the fifth straight time at home.
In short, this is real good, and getting better.
You've got to love Coach Dip Metress's enthusiasm. He's urging on fans during the game and taking the microphone to thank them afterward.
The fans are thanking him, too. A season-high crowd of 1,800 went home whooping Wednesday night. You should have been among them.
The good news is, there are two more home games left - Feb. 17 against UNC Pembroke and Feb. 24 against Georgia Southwestern. And there's room for more fans who know a good thing when they see it.
This is certifiably one of the best basketball teams in the country. And it's Augusta's team. Come out and support it.
