Museum's art programs emphasize creativity

While art workshops are not new at the Morris Museum of Art, most have been related to an exhibit and were held in a short time frame.

Saturday, the museum offered its first full-day workshop, a multimedia collage class designed for high school and college students. It was led by Nancy Wellington Bookhart, an art professor at Paine College and Augusta State University.

"I liked it. It was fun," said Demanti O'Bryant, a North Augusta High School senior.

Students were urged to bring photographs or other images for the class, and Ms. Bookhart worked to open up their minds to the use of other materials to convey feelings and get a message to those viewing the artwork.

Mr. O'Bryant's piece was about New York City. "There's graffiti," he said. "The plastic tubes represent the industry, and the fabric represents it's a fashion capital."

Susanna Bondar, a 13-year-old Riverside Middle School pupil, created a piece about a fantasy realm of horses and fairies.

The piece featured purple hues and was accented with gold and glitter.

"You have convinced me there is a possibility there is something beyond what we can see," Ms. Bookhart said of Susanna's work.

Michelle Schulte, the museum's community and public programs coordinator, said the museum has more classes planned for adults and teens.

"The adult classes are filling up," she said.

There will be a two-dimensional mixed-media class for adults from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16. The cost is $40 for museum members and $60 for nonmembers. The deadline to register is Friday.

On Friday and Saturday, there will be a found object sculpture workshop for teenagers. The workshop will be from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. both days, and the work will remain on display during the exhibit Something to Look Forward to: Abstract Art by 22 Distinguished Americans of African Descent, which opens March 25. The cost of the class is $35 for museum members and $55 for nonmembers, and the deadline to register is March 3.

There will be another adult class from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. March 16, and it will focus on abstract collage. The cost is $40 for museum members and $60 for nonmembers. The registration deadline is March 10.
