House of blues might be difference for Jags

Augusta State wants its biggest game in three decades to be its bluest as well.

The school is encouraging all fans to wear blue when the 16th-ranked Jaguars play No. 10 Clayton State at 7:30 tonight in Augusta State's first top 25 matchup inside Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Attendance hasn't been a problem this season for the Jaguars. The men's team leads the Peach Belt Conference with an average estimated crowd of 1,045 people per contest.

Third-year Augusta State coach Dip Metress said tonight's crowd could potentially be the largest - and bluest - of the season.

"If I look up and see the seats in the corners filled, I'll know we've done something special," he said.

Attendance matters because the Jaguars (18-3, 10-0) are undefeated in eight home games. Augusta State, which owns a 10-game winning streak, has won 28 of 33 home games under Metress. One of those defeats was against Clayton State last season, an 83-66 loss.

"Last year they came in here and waxed us good," Metress said.

Augusta State sports a different squad this time, with Tyrekus Bowman, the conference's leading scorer at 19.9 points per game, the lone starter back from that game. The team now has size in the frontcourt with 6-foot-11, 304-pound sophomore center Garret Siler. The backcourt also has added firepower, with freshman guards Ben Madgen - the Peach Belt's third-leading scorer (16.3) - Daniel Dixon and Kip Small.

Augusta State features the top-scoring and best-shooting team in the league. Clayton State counters with the conference's top defensive and rebounding squad.

The Lakers are 19-2 overall and 8-2 in the conference. Clayton State, led by senior guard Todd McLaurin (15.1 points per game), has lost two of its past four games and trails the Jaguars by two games in the South Division.

Augusta State can go a long way toward clinching the division with a win tonight. The Jaguars would lead the South - and the entire conference - by three with six contests remaining.
