Lady 'Pack stay perfect

WHO'S HOT: Greenbrier Lady Wolfpack. A perfect regular season earned coach Garrett Black his first region title on the basketball court. The lack of a strong post presence probably won't keep the Lady Wolfpack (24-0) from adding a region tourney title this month.

WHO'S NOT: Washington County. The Golden Hawks were knocked off their perch on top of Region 3-AAA North last week. The Hawks dropped two consecutive sub-region games to let Glenn Hills and Thomson catch up in the race for the top seed in the sub-region.

BEST WIN LAST WEEK: Thomson 66, Washington County 60: See above.

TOP AREA GAMES THIS WEEK:

1. Hephzibah (14-7) at Richmond Academy (15-8), 6:30 tonight: It's a non-region clash between two old rivals now, but it should still make for thrilling basketball given how hot Musketeer Trevor Welcher has been of late.

2. Wilkinson County (23-1) at Swainsboro (19-2), 7:45 p.m. Friday: Swainsboro has only improved since handing the top team in Class A its only loss of the year earlier this season.

HOT TOPIC: Ties. That's the norm this year in Region 3-AAA. The North and South sub-regions have first-place ties at this point. The South has finished up its sub-region play. Burke County and Hephzibah are tied with 7-2 region records.

That tie will be broken the way the one in the North eventually will be. Most North teams still have region games left to play today.

"Any ties that can't be broken by head-to-head record are decided by Class AAA Georgia win percentage," Burke County athletics director Wade Marchum said.

Burke County has the South's top seed heading into region play next week because it has fewer Class AAA losses than Hephzibah.

STATE SECRET: Laney girls coach Otis Smart said point guard Kami Phillips has been named to the North-South All-State game by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association. The senior transfer from Hephzibah was nominated by Screven County coach Jennifer Acree.

"She didn't have anyone there to nominate her at the all-star meeting," Acree said. "But I told coach Smart I spoke up for her. She had my vote."

Phillips, who will play for the South, had 12 assists Friday in a win against Screven County.

"She's the best passer I've ever had," Smart said. "I've got 27 years coaching at Laney and 23 with the girls. Best one."

CHANGE OF VENUE: Region 3-AAA will decide its four playoff seeds for boys and girls at Cross Creek this year. The tournament will return to Burke County in 2008.
