Supports Al Gore for U.S. president

Editor, The Chronicle

Republicans and Democrats would like to see this country continue its economic growth. So we must ask ourselves: Should we change political parties in the White House in the middle of the most prosperous time in our history?

The majority of Americans would like to maintain the separation of church and state. If we allow prayer in the classrooms, who's prayers should they be? If Jewish, we would not be praying in Jesus' name. Should we introduce Muslim or Buddhist prayers into the classrooms, or should only Christian prayers be allowed? This country is too diversified to abandon the separation of church and state.

The majority of Americans want a woman's right to choose protected by the Supreme Court. If it is not, women will be forced to seek back-alley abortions, breaking the law and risking their lives.

During the next administration, possibly two or three judges will be appointed to the Supreme Court. If judges who are opposed to the separation of church and state and to Roe v. Wade are appointed, they could send this country down a road that I don't think the majority of us want to go.

To elect one of the Republican candidates to the White House at this point in time is a risk the American people cannot afford to take.

Candidate Bill Bradley gives the impression that if he wins it's OK and if he loses it's OK. He does not seem to have a burning desire for the job. So, Al Gore is the logical choice to lead this country as we explore with enthusiasm the 21st Century.

Hoyt Goodson, Waynesboro
