Freezing rain expected Sunday
Web posted Friday, January 30, 2004
| From Staff Reports
Ice could return to the Augusta area Sunday morning in the form of freezing rain and sleet, but weather officials say they don't expect conditions to be as bad as Monday's ice storm.
Tina Morrison, of the National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C., said a mix of light freezing rain and sleet could start in the area at about 9 a.m. Sunday and last for three to four hours before turning into all rain. She said that could cause ice to accumulate in areas until the temperature rises above freezing.
"It looks like maybe a tenth of an inch (accumulation) of freezing rain," she said, noting that shouldn't be enough to cause any more downed tree limbs.
The high Sunday is predicted to be 42. As of 10 a.m., there was a 40 percent chance of the wintry mix occurring. Ms. Morrison said another forecast update will come around 3 p.m. today.
