Final resting place still not determined

James Brown body's has been moved off his Beech Island property to an undisclosed location, one of his attorneys said Friday.

The solid gold casket is now in a temporary, above-ground crypt, according to Buddy Dallas, the late entertainer's estate trustee and longtime counsel.

Mr. Dallas would not say where, nor would he elaborate on the reason for the move.

"I can't discuss it," he said.

After the Godfather of Soul's Dec. 30 "homegoing" ceremony at the Augusta arena that bears his name, his coffin was driven to his home and placed in a climate-controlled room for 20 days.

It was moved Thursday afternoon, the same day his will was filed in Aiken County Probate Court.

Mr. Dallas said plans for the 60-acre Beech Island property are still being worked out, and a final decision hasn't been made about Mr. Brown's final resting place.

The coffin eventually will be placed in an above-ground mausoleum accessible to the public. The Godfather's six adult children - Deanna J. Brown, Yamma Lumar, Vanisha Brown, Daryl Brown, Larry Brown and Terry Brown - are said to be leaning toward building the mausoleum in Beech Island and turning the estate into a Graceland-style museum.

Another of Mr. Brown's attorneys, Debra Opri, told the Associated Press last week that family members, friends and estate trustees planned to consult with Elvis Presley's family to learn how they opened Graceland, which attracts roughly 600,000 visitors each year.

Mr. Brown died Christmas Day at age 73 in Atlanta after coming down with pneumonia. According to his death certificate, he had been suffering from heart disease for three years and died of cardiac arrest.

His will called for his personal belongings, including furniture, jewelry, clothing, cars and boats, to be divided equally among his six adult children.

It made no mention of 5-year-old James Brown II or the child's mother, Tomi Rae Hynie Brown, who was either Mr. Brown's fourth wife or his ex-girlfriend, pending the outcome of an ongoing dispute.
