Wait staff gave unwanted lip service

Dear Carson: My wife and I recently had dinner with another couple in an upscale restaurant. The wife of the other man ordered fresh orange juice. It was so good that she ordered another, but the second glass of juice tasted like it came from concentrate. She asked the waiter to replace it with a fresh glass of juice. He argued with her, saying that the kitchen staff maintained that it was fresh and the chef came out from the kitchen and adamantly denied that the second glass of juice was from concentrate. It ended up being quite a scene and the four of us were embarrassed by the unpleasantness and will not return to that restaurant. What should we have done? - Orange Juice Objection

Dear Orange Juice: When you complained about the second glass of juice, there should have been no argument from the wait staff. They should simply have returned the offending glass of juice without a word. It is unpleasant as well as poor business to argue with customers. You are right in not wanting to return. I would simply have accepted their denial with no further ado, but not return.

Dear Carson: How do you address a formal invitation to a couple where the wife is a doctor and the husband is a "Mr." but they both have the same last name? - Address Angst

Dear Angst: In such a case the envelope should be addressed as follows: "Mr. Joseph Todd Smith and Dr. Mary Branch Smith". If the couple has different last names I recommend addressing them on two separate lines, i.e. "Dr. Susan Bernard Jones" on one line and on the other "Mr. Carl Joseph Fuqua".

Dear Carson: My husband and I are invited to a Buddhist wedding ceremony. We are totally unfamiliar with their customs and do not want to do anything that might unknowingly offend them. Could you give us some pointers? - Buddhist Behavior

Dear BB:
I, too, am unfamiliar with Buddhist ceremonial tradition. However, I do have a book titled, How to Be a Perfect Stranger, The Essential Religious Etiquette Handbook, edited by Stuart M. Matlins & Arthur J. Magida, of Skylights Publishing Company of Woodstock, Vt. This book outlines ceremonial customs for various faiths. The following are some points with which you should be aware:

  • There is no set of ceremonial rites and the ceremony lasts from 15 to 30 minutes.

  • No gifts are expected.

  • Clothing varies for men according to taste, but women would be advised to wear loose clothing as there are usually cushions placed on the floor for seating.

  • One should neither enter nor leave during the meditation.

  • The correct form of address for clergy may be Reverend, Roshi or Lama.

  • It is not appropriate to take videos, flashes or tape recordings, except by prior approval of a priest or monk and only then if your doing so is disruptive.
