Monopoly can arouse territorial animosities

David Hoel and his son Teddy don't play Monopoly at home.

"We fight too much," said Mr. Hoel, who turned out with his son for the Jan. 5 Monopoly tournament to benefit Aiken's Fermata Club.

There wasn't any fighting at the Hoels' table during the preliminary match, but the players seemed to get quite excited about $12 or $18 in rent they received.

This was the second Monopoly tournament fundraiser for the private social, swim and tennis club, according to organizer Chuck Foster.

"We had a whole lot more interest this year," he said. "We had people come from Greenville and Evans."

There were eight players in the tournament, which was won by David McCaslin, a sophomore at Greenbrier High School. The tournament included a preliminary round followed by the championship round with the top four money winners from the preliminaries.

David, who received a Hasbro game pack, is an avid Monopoly player.

"I'm good at Monopoly. I play all the time with my friends," he said.

Mr. Foster said he got the idea for the Monopoly tournament after he and his daughter Emily participated in one at the Aiken County Library several years ago.

"She was second and I was third," he said. "She's never let me live that down."

Emily is a senior at Strom Thurmond High School, and the two played in the library tournament when she was in middle school.

Mr. Foster said he plans to continue the Fermata Club tournament and hopes the number of participants keeps increasing.
