USC Spartanburg visits Augusta State

Web posted January 12, 1998

From Staff Reports

Challenges continue for Augusta State University's Jaguars, who tonight play host to USC Spartanburg's Rifles in the Physical Education/Athletic Complex.

The Jaguars have recorded only two victories in 12 games this season and share the Peach Belt Athletic Conference basement with UNC Pembroke, which visits Augusta State on Wednesday.

The Jaguars (0-4, 2-10) are coming off Saturday night's 80-68 loss at Columbus State (3-1, 12-2).

On the other hand, the Rifles (3-0, 10-2) are in second place behind leader Francis Marion (5-0, 9-5) in the PBAC's North Division, having played two less conference games than the Patriots.

The Rifles edged Georgia College and State's Colonials 68-65 on Saturday night.

Augusta State's Lady Jaguars (2-2, 8-3) suffered only their third loss of the season at Columbus State's hands and enter tonight's game in second place in the North Division percentage points ahead of the Lady Rifles (1-2, 7-4).

The women's game gets the ball bouncing at 5:30 p.m.

Marc Hutcheson and Thomas Ryan hit clutch free throws down the stretch as USC Aiken's Pacers edged Kennesaw State 76-74 on Saturday night. The Pacers had led by 11 at halftime, but Kennesaw closed the gap and tied the game with three seconds to play. Hutcheson sank one of two free throw attempts for a two-point lead and Kennesaw missed a three-point attempt at the buzzer.

Juan Wiley, who scored 23 points over a 20-minute period, was charged with his second technical foul and ejected from the game with nine minutes to play. Kendrick Smith scored 22 points and became the Pacers' all-time leading scorer with 1,184 points.

Christale Spain became the Lady Pacers' all-time leading scorer in their 88-63 loss to Kennesaw State. Spain has a career total of 1,160 points.
