ASSISTANCE: The Norfolk Southern Corp. assistance center will be open through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Aiken. Those seeking assistance must present current and valid photo identification. For more information, call (803) 648-2662 or (803) 642-7119.
CURFEW: A mandatory evacuation remains in effect for a one-mile radius from the crash site. The curfew is 6 p.m. to 7 a.m.
COUNSELING: The Aiken-Barnwell Mental Health Center is offering services for residents affected by the accident and chlorine leak. For more information, call (803) 641-7700. For emergencies, call the 24-hour psychiatric emergency line at (803) 648-9900.
FAMILY PETS: Evacuated residents can arrange to have Aiken County Animal Control retrieve pets by calling 617-8326, 617-8306 or 617-8305.
GOVERNMENT SERVICES: Mail for the evacuated area has been rerouted to the Clearwater Post Office. The Graniteville Magistrate's Office is closed until further notice. Anyone who has law enforcement-related business may go to one of the other Aiken County Magistrate offices.
PAYCHECKS: Avondale Mills employees who did not receive last week's paychecks can go to the Administrative Services Building at 1089 Augusta Road in Warrenville to pick up paychecks through Friday. For more information, call (706) 284-2770.
DISPLACED BUSINESS: Graniteville Family Medical Center will set up a temporary location at 60 Physician Drive in Aiken, across the street from Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Current patients who need to reach the doctor can call 663-9224. Patients can schedule appointments at the new location starting Thursday by calling 649-5608.
Makeup Day
Aiken Tech will be open Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, as a makeup day for classes missed Monday, Jan. 10.
Alternate routes to Aiken Technical College:
From Richland Avenue and/or Highway 118 bypass: Detour to Highway 421 W. Follow Highway 421 W and turn right onto Depot Street. Immediately turn left onto Railroad Avenue Turn right onto Langley Dam Road. Turn right onto Highway 1. Aiken Tech will be a half-mile down on the left.
From Interstate 20: Take Exit 5 and go east on Highway 25 toward Bevedere/North Augusta. Turn left on Ascauga Lake Road. Turn left onto Highway 1. Aiken Tech will be on your left.
Special Section: Graniteville Train Wreck
On January 6, 2005, a Norfolk Southern Corp. freight train carrying chemicals hit a parked train near an Avondale Mills plant in Graniteville, South Carolina. The impact caused poisonous chlorine gas to leak from three of the moving train's cars. Nine people were killed and more than 5,000 people were evacuated from the site.
