The Augusta Disc Golf Association says the rules for its annual Ice Bowl are simple:

No cancellations for cold weather.

No wimps.

And no excuses for not making a donation to the association's charity of choice.

The 17th annual event will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, at Lake Olmstead. The entry fee is $20 and a donation of canned goods for the Golden Harvest Food Bank. Each participant receives a player's package, and the association welcomes players of all skill levels.

The Ice Bowl began as a charitable event in 1987 and is played at disc golf courses all over the United States, Canada and Europe during January and February.

The goal is to raise a total of $75,000 to assist local charities.

In 2003, $1,700 and 367 pounds of food was collected for the Golden Harvest Food Bank, making Augusta seventh in the nation in money collected.

According to the ADGA, the sport is similar to regular golf in procedure, pace, and psychology. However, instead of clubs, golfers use specialized flying discs and, instead of a hole, they play into a disc golf basket.

The Augusta-area has four challenging courses, including Lake Olmstead, Pendleton King Park, Riverview Park and Patriots Park.

For more information, call Sue Anne Beym of the ADGA at (706) 737-6095.

COACHING CLINIC: The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has selected Augusta as one of the host sites for coaching education this summer.

The NSCAA and the Augusta Arsenal Soccer Club worked together to bring the national-level courses to Augusta Soccer Park.

The following courses will be offered June 7-13 at the soccer park and the Sheraton Augusta: national diploma, advanced national diploma and premier diploma.

For registration information, visit the NSCAA Web site at www.nscaa.com or call (706) 854-0149.

FUTURE OLYMPIANS: Six girls from the Augusta Arsenal select soccer program have been selected to play for the Georgia Olympic Developmental Program.

The nationwide program is designed to identify the best talent in the state and develop it for the United States soccer program.

Augusta's ODP players are: Catie Smith, Annie Speese, Stephanie Allen, Elena Freeman, Mary Rob Plunkett and KC MacEachern.

The Georgia ODP program, based in Atlanta, has teams at several age levels that will compete in tournament play against teams from around the Southeast.

Players are selected through a series of tryouts and recommendations from coaches around the state.
