KSU wins battle of Fiesta Bowl QBs Web posted January 2, 1998
Bishop's 77-yard touchdown throw to Darnell McDonald while on a full run trying to elude Syracuse defenders early in the fourth quarter gave Kansas State a 28-15 lead and he sealed the game with a 41-yard touchdown pass to McDonald with 3:17 left.
McDonald caught three of Bishop's touchdown passes, and set a Fiesta Bowl record with 206 receiving yards.
It was the first loss in eight bowl games for Syracuse (9-4), which also had its eight-game winning streak snapped.
Kansas State (11-1) did all its scoring in the second and fourth quarters, threatening to break the game open in the second quarter with three quick touchdowns that gave the Wildcats a 21-3 lead.
Bishop, who led his undefeated junior college team to two national titles, capped his first season on the major college level with a brilliant showing that eclipsed the effort of McNabb, the junior Syracuse star.
Bishop threw for 317 yards, far surpassing his previous best of 218 yards against Kansas, while McNabb threw for 271 yards and was intercepted once.
Both quarterbacks led their teams in rushing, with Bishop running 15 times for 73 yards and McNabb running 16 times for 81 yards.
