Tom Hamilton
Web posted January 1, 2000 Have a thought? Go to the @ugusta Forums.
He was born in Columbia County in 1885 and graduated from Hephzibah High School in 1902. He became a reporter for the Augusta Herald in 1906 after attending Mercer University. He later was sports editor, copy editor and managing editor of the Herald before becoming editor of The Augusta Chronicle in 1919. Hamilton's ``Ambitions for Augusta'' list of goals became regularly seen on the Chronicle's editorial pages, and it was his support and work that led to the enlargement of the levee and completion of the $2 million New Savannah River Lock and Dam. He was awarded the Augusta postmastership in 1933, was chairman of the Georgia Advisory Board of Public Works and was president of the Savannah River Improvement Commission. He was honored shortly before his death in 1937 as Augusta's most valuable citizen.
