The United States' 28th president, is considered to be the first American in the 20th century to be an international leader. Although Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Va., his formative years were spent in Augusta. The family moved here when Wilson was only 1 year old. Wilson's parents were deeply religious -- his father a Presbyterian minister -- and well educated. Their influence on the young Wilson growing up in Augusta helped him become a skillful writer with a deep interest in the science of government.

As president from 1913 to 1921, Wilson is best remembered for helping write the Treaty of Versailles, effectively ending World War I. The document included his constitution of the League of Nations, which became the precursor of the United Nations.
