Georgia hopes new Uga will be in place for opener

Georgia could have a new Uga roaming the sidelines of Sanford Stadium at its football season opener on Sept. 1.

“We hope to present the dog physically at the first home game,” Sonny Seiler, whose family has provided the famed English bulldog mascots since the 1950s, said Friday. “That’s what’s in the works now. Can it change? Yeah, it can change, but that’s all I can tell you now.”

The hope is that the next Uga will be announced on the Georgia football team’s picture day, which is usually held in mid-August.

“We’ve got two puppies that are direct line,” Seiler said. “We’re not sure which one or either (will be picked). We might have a third one, but we don’t have to make a decision until August.”

Seiler said the dogs under consideration now will turn 1 by August, which he said will guarantee they are big enough.
