The 6-foot-3, 290-pound Beard played this past season at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

The Adamsville, Ala., native has three years of eligibility remaining.

Georgia is losing senior starting offensive tackles Cordy Glenn and Justin Anderson after the Outback Bowl.

Beard will enroll at Georgia in January. Wednesday was the first day that midyear enrollees from junior college could sign.

Coach Mark Richt has said he signs junior college players with the intention of them being able to start.

“If you do sign one, that’s kind of what you’re looking at,” offensive line coach Will Friend said last week. “Anybody we sign we expect them to come in and compete.”

Beard picked Georgia over Mississippi State and Arkansas.

He was named a National Junior College Athletic Association honorable mention All-American and earned first team All-Jayhawk Conference honors.

• Richt said the contract extension he’s working on with athletic director Greg McGarity won’t be finalized until after the bowl.

“It’s not a major rush,” Richt said. “Greg and I trust each other.”

• Defensive end DeAngelo Tyson and linebacker Mike Gilliard, who didn’t practice during bowl preparations because of ankle injuries, aren’t certain to play in the bowl, Richt said.

He said that he thinks offensive guard Chris Burnette (sinus infection) “will be fine.”

Richt said he thinks punter Drew Butler (ankle) “will be kicking” in the bowl. ” I’m hoping he’s punting the day we get there, but I’m not sure of that.”

• Richt was asked about his talks with backup quarterback Hutson Mason, who is considering transferring after the season.

“I’m not going to get into any of my private conversations with Hutson, but I can understand where he’s coming from,” Richt said. “We’ve talked and I’m trying to help him with whatever decision he makes, make it a good one.”
