Saturday: America's Boating Course will be offered by Savannah River Sail & Power Squadron from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Richmond County Fire Station No. 1 at Broad Street and East Boundary. SEPT. 30: Quail Unlimited's Augusta Chapter No. 1 will hold its annual banquet with doors opening at 6 p.m. at Savannah Rapids Pavilion. Tickets start at $75, which includes dinner and a one-year membership. Corporate sponsorships and complete table reservations are also available. OCT. 1-3: Graves Mountain, a former mine known for its rare -- and sometimes very valuable -- minerals, will be open to the public for the semiannual "Rock, Swap & Dig" event in which visitors can chisel away at rock outcrops in search of treasure. The mine will be open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day. Although admission is free, donations to offset the cost of the event are accepted, said Clarence "Junior" Norman, the caretaker of the Lincoln County, Ga., site. Visitors can dig for minerals that include rutile and iridescent hematite. Mineral and rock collectors from across the Southeast will have booths for buying, selling and trading, and vendors will provide food and drinks. Families are welcome. To get to Graves Mountain from Lincolnton, go west on U.S. Highway 378 toward Washington, Ga. The mine is about 3 miles ahead on the left. For details, call (706) 359-3862.

OCT. 22: A Full Moon Hike will be held from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. Join staffers in search of animals such as owls, frogs, beavers and bats by nature's brightest night light. The hike lasts two hours and could cover up to 21/2 miles. Cost is $6 for members, $10 for nonmembers. Call (706) 828-2109 for more information.
