Royal Delta's bid at three-peat in Breeders' Cup denied

ARCADIA, Calif. — Beholder won the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Distaff by four lengths, denying two-time defending champion Royal Delta a third consecutive victory.

Ridden by Gary Stevens, Beholder ran
1⅛ miles in 1:47.77 and paid $7.60, $4.20 and $3.20 on Friday at Santa Anita.

Close Hatches returned $6.60 and $4.80. Authenticity was another two lengths back in third and paid $4.20 to show.

Royal Delta and jockey Mike Smith finished fourth in the field of six. She won the previous two years when the race was called the Ladies’ Classic.

It was the ninth career Cup victory for Stevens, 50. He last won a Cup race in 2000.

DIRT MILE: Goldencents raced to the lead out of the gate and held on to win the
$1 million event by three lengths over Golden Ticket.

Verrazano, the 5-2 favorite, finished fourth. Godolphin Racing’s Alpha, the 2012 Aiken-trained Horse of the Year, finished eighth in the field of 11.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Goldencents ran the distance in 1:35.12 and paid $9.60, $5 and $4. Among Goldencents’ ownership group is Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino.

JUVENILE TURF: Outstrip roared down the center of the course, overtaking the leaders just before the finish line to win the $1 million race by a length over Giovanni Boldini, extending Smith’s record for most Breeders’ Cup victories among jockeys to 19.

Smith earlier won the Marathon aboard London Bridge.

Owned by Godolphin Racing, Outstrip covered a mile in 1:33.20 and paid $14, $6.80 and $3.60 at 6-1 odds.

JUVENILE FILLIES TURF: Chriselliam won the $1 million event by three lengths over Testa Rossi.

Ridden by Richard Hughes, Ireland-bred Chriselliam ran a mile in a record 1:33.72 for the race and paid $15.80, $7.80 and $6.20.

MARATHON: London Bridge rallied on the outside in the stretch to win the $500,000 race by a length over Blueskiesnrainbows.

The 3-year-old colt ran 1¾ miles in 2:58.32. London Bridge paid $20, $10.20 and $6.40 in becoming the first New York-bred to win a Breeders’ Cup race.
