Ironman of the Day: Marci Cannon

AGE: 42

FROM: Augusta

OCCUPATION: Development director, Savannah Riverkeeper

EXPERIENCE: Cannon started her triathlon career with a sprint distance event in 2010. The following year, she competed in the swimming portion of the intermedix Ironman 70.3 Augusta. Last year, she planned to compete in the entire Augusta event, but on Labor Day, she was training on her bike on St. Helena Island, S.C., when a truck passed her on the left and made an immediate right-hand turn. The accident left her with bruises, bruised ribs, separated muscles in rib cage and road rash.

“I had trained all year for Ironman Augusta last year,” she said. “I couldn’t let four weeks away from that stop me. … I was still banged up, but I still met all my expectations in the race.”

GAME PLAN: After finishing in five hours and 57 minutes last year, Cannon said she’s shooting for a new personal best. As part of a group of 10 men and women from the Augusta area training for Ironman Florida – a 140.6 event – Nov. 2, in Panama City, Fla., Cannon said she has no time to taper off for the Augusta event.

“I train all the time,” she said. “I don’t really stop.”
