Jags lose ground in spring opener

In Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, the Augusta State men dropped back to ninth place Monday in the second round of the Puerto Rico Classic.

The Jaguars, playing in their first event of the spring season, posted 6-over-par 294 and are 10-over 586 for the tournament at Rio Mar Country Club.

Alabama and Oklahoma share the lead at 557.

Augusta State freshman Maverick Antcliff carded 1-over 73 and is tied for 17th in the individual standings. He was tied for fifth after the first round.

Eduardo Castiello, of Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech’s Mikey Moyers share the lead at 137.

Also for Augusta State, Derek Chang (72-75–147) is tied for 37th, Robin Petterson (72-78–150) is tied for 48th, Alex Wennstam (79-73–152) is tied for 57th and Cody Shafer (83-73–156) is tied for 68th.

The final round of the 54-hole tournament is today.

• In Parrish, Fla., the Augusta State women are in eighth place after two rounds of the Central District Invitational at Wilderness Golf Club.

The Lady Jaguars sit at 35-over 611. Vanderbilt leads with 588.

Augusta State’s Natalie Wille is tied for the individual lead after posted rounds of 72-71–143. Caroline Powers, of Michigan State, and Vanderbilt’s Lauren Stratton are also at 1-under.

Also for the Lady Jaguars, Casey Kennedy (75-73–148) is 10th, Christien Duschek-Hansen (80-80–160) and Julia Stalbro (79-81–160) are tied for 53rd and Marit Bjerke
(80-81–161) is tied for 55th.

• In Hilton Head Island, S.C., the third-ranked USC Aiken men got off to a rough start in their spring season opener.

The Pacers had 22-over 310 in the first round and are tied for 13th in the
18-team Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate. Francis Marion leads at 291.

For the Pacers, Matt Atkins (74) is tied for 18th, Mark Dickson (78) is tied for 56th, J.P. Solis and Drew McElveen (79) are tied for 61st and Kyle Godsman (83) is tied for 84th.

South Florida’s Trey Valentine (69) leads the individual standings at Wexford Plantation Course.

College Basketball

Panthers put end to Lions’ streak

In Orangeburg, S.C., Terrence Bowman scored 21 points to lead the Claflin men to a 70-60 win over Paine.

Kedric Taylor scored 19 points to lead the Lions (12-13, 10-7 SIAC), who had their four-game winning streak snapped. Sean Morgan added 13.

David Glover chipped in with 14 points for the Panthers (10-15, 8-9).

• In Orangeburg, S.C., Tylesha Brown scored 24 points, Laquanda Williams had 17 points and 21 rebounds, and the Claflin women beat Paine, 77-71.

Talaya Robinson added
16 points for the Lady Panthers (5-20, 4-11).

Kiara Farley led the Lady Lions (11-14, 9-6) with 22 points and Ashley Watts had 21. Kiara Johnson chipped in with 14 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

College Baseball

Jaguars cannot complete sweep

Chris Zittrouer drove in three runs to help Armstrong Atlantic State avoid a sweep with a 10-2 win over Augusta State at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Dalton Johnson added two RBI for the Pirates (7-2).

Jaguars starter Josh Barks was roughed up early, allowing six runs on eight hits in three innings.

Augusta State took the first two games of the rain-delayed series Sunday.
