Jaguars now 4-0 after win on road
In Richmond, Va., Ryan Weems came off the bench to score 19 points and lead Augusta State to a 73-67 victory over Virginia Union on Sunday.
D’Angelo Boyce and Devonte Thomas added 12 points each for the Jaguars (4-0). Boyce also had six assists. Chad July grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds. Devon Wright-Nelson, who started despite a calf strain, had nine points and nine rebounds.
Virginia Union, a three-time national champion, dropped to 0-4 for first time since the 1963-64 season.
Two area players close in on cards
In La Quinta, Calif., Evans resident Vaughn Taylor and Aiken native Kevin Kisner are one round from earning their PGA Tour cards for the 2013 season.
Taylor and Kisner are tied for 17th heading into today’s sixth and final round of the PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
Kisner (67 on Sunday) and Taylor (73) are at 16-under 344.
The final top 25 and ties after today’s play will receive PGA Tour cards and the next 50 and ties will earn Web.com Tour cards.
Former Augusta State golfers Patrick Reed and Henrik Norlander both shot 68 on Sunday and are tied for 46th at 12-under. Aiken’s Stephen Poole (68) is tied for 116th at 4-under, while Augusta’s Scott Parel (78) and North Augusta’s Scott Brown (70) are tied for 160th at 7-over.
Steven Bowditch shot 64 to take a one-stroke lead after the fifth round. Bowditch has a 23-under 337 total. Kris Blanks is second after 66, and Derek Ernst (66), Steve LeBrun (67) and Edward Loar (68) follow at 21-under.
Two-time heart transplant recipient and former Georgia golfer Erik Compton is tied for 15th at 17-under after 67.
• In Daytona Beach, Fla., part-time Augusta resident Nicole Jeray survived a seven-player playoff for the final four spots to earn full status for the 2013 season in the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament.
Jeray shot 2-under-par 70 in the final round at LPGA International to tie for 17th at 3-under 357.
Lauren Doughtie, Taylore Karle and Irene Cho also survived the playoff to earn full status.
Rebecca Lee-Bentham shot 67 to tie Moriya Jutanugarn (74) for the top spot, leading the 20 players who earned full status.
Lee-Bentham and Jutanugarn finished at 13-under 347.
Former Augusta State golfer Garrett Phillips closed with 71 to tie for 32nd at even par and earn partial status for 2013.
Knicks top Suns, are 7-0 at home
In New York, Carmelo Anthony scored 34 points as the New York Knicks won their third consecutive game and remained unbeaten at home with a 106-99 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.
Raymond Felton had 23 points, seven assists and no turnovers for the Knicks, who are 7-0 at Madison Square Garden and 12-4 overall.
Marcin Gortat had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Suns.
Tar Heels claim national crown
In San Diego, North Carolina scored three goals in the second half to beat Penn State 4-1 and win its 21st women’s soccer NCAA championship.
The Tar Heels (15-5-3), who were making their 26th appearance in the final four College Cup, won the title for the first time since 2009.
