Ex-Jaguar is tied for first after 63

In Kingwood, Texas, former Augusta State All-American Patrick Reed shot 9-under-par 63 on Wednesday to share the lead in a first stage PGA Tour Qualifying School event at Deerwood Golf Club.

Reed, who opened with 69 is at 12-under 132. The top 17 finishers after 72 holes move on to the second stage.

Roger Furrer, another former Jaguar playing at this site, had 69 and is tied for 46th place.

In another first stage event in Lewisville, Texas, former Jaguar Wallace Booth (70-72) is tied for ninth place. Henrik Norlander (72-73), another former Jag, is tied for 26th place. The top 18 advance.

Two other first-stage events started on Wednesday. In Pine Mountain, Ga., former Jaguar Mitch Krywulycz shot 71 and is tied for 34th place at Callaway Gardens’ Mountain Course. The top 18 advance.

And in Florence, S.C., Stephen Poole is tied for 14th place after 68, Garland Smith is tied for 37th place after 71, Scott Usher is tied for 45th place after 72 and David Robinson is tied for 59th place after 74. The top 17 advance.

• In Southampton, Bermuda, Padraig Harrington won the PGA Grand Slam of Golf.

Harrington, who was subbing for Ernie Els, closed with 4-under-par 67 for 9-under 133 and a one-shot victory over U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson (69-65) at Port Royal.

Masters Tournament champion Bubba Watson (68-71) and Keegan Bradley (72-67) tied for third place at 139.

Fall’s goal gives Pacers huge win

In Aiken, Mohamed Fall’s goal in the 72nd minute gave USC Aiken a 1-0 soccer victory over UNC Pembroke on Wednesday night.

The moved the Pacers (5-5-4, 2-5-1 Peach Belt Conference) into sole possession of eighth place in the conference standings with one match to play. The top eight teams advance to the Peach Belt Conference Soccer Championship.

• In the women’s match, UNC Pembroke’s Julia Nytorp scored a late goal to give the Lady Braves a 3-2 victory over USC Aiken.

The Pacers (4-10-3, 3-6-1 Peach Belt Conference) had tied the match at 2-2 on Taylor Simmons’ first goal of the season.

Nytorp scored the game-winner two minutes later.

Megan Smits had USC Aiken’s other goal.

• Augusta State cross country coach Adam Ward has completed a sweep of Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors.

At the conference meet, Ward was named the men’s cross country coach of the year for the 2012 season.

He had previously won coach of the year honors with the Lady Jaguars’ cross country team five times.

• On Tuesday night, Augusta State’s volleyball team saw it rally come up short in a 3-2 loss to Montevallo.

Augusta State lost the first two sets 25-14 and 25-19, then won the next two 25-19 and 25-16. In the decisive fifth set, Montevallo won 15-12.

• Georgia Southern is playing host to an Athletics Night, featuring members of the athletic staff, today at Wild Wing Cafe at 3035 Washington Road. The event will start at 5 p.m.

Classic banquet is set for tonight

Norman Bonner and Dr. Roscoe Williams will be inducted into the Augusta City Classic Hall of Fame tonight.

They will be inducted during the Augusta City Classic Hall of Fame Banquet at Augusta Marriott at the Convention Center.
