Pacers fall short in bid for upset
In St. Augustine, Fla., fifth-ranked Flagler College edged USC Aiken 3-2 in overtime for a Peach Belt Conference men’s soccer victory on Wednesday night.
Flagler’s Marco Padilla scored in the 99th minute off an assist from Jonny Cosgrove for the victory.
Both of the Pacers’ scores came on own goals, the second one coming at the 69:21 mark. That tied it at 2.
Flagler improved to 8-1-1 and 6-0 in the conference. USC Aiken is 3-3-2 and 1-3.
USC Aiken’s Joshua Poissant gave up the three Flagler goals, but also had seven saves.
• In St. Augustine, Fla., Heaven Tylee’s goal early in the second half helped USC Aiken earn a 1-1 double overtime tie with Flagler.
Flager tied it at 1 on Lindsay Zullo penalty kick in the 81st minute.
Neither team could score in the final nine minutes of regulation or in the two overtime periods.
The Pacers are 4-6-2 and 3-2-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
• In Charlotte, N.C., Augusta State’s volleyball team stopped Queens University 3-1 in a non-conference match to snap a six-match losing streak.
Kristen Koch and Alex Rohlfing combined for 23 kills, with Koch leading the way with 12.
Krystin Wahlig had 20 assists to lead Augusta State (8-9).
• USC Aiken’s golf team is the highest ranked Peach Belt Conference team in the first Golf World/Nike Golf Division II men’s coaches’ poll of the regular season.
The Pacers, who received one first-place vote, are seventh after being fifth in the preseason poll. Georgia College & State is the next highest-ranked Peach Belt team at 11th.
The Pacers opened their fall season with a 14th-place finish in the Invitational at the
Ocean Course and then won
the Kiawah Island Invitational. Their next event is the Firestone Invitational, which starts Monday.
Reed will play in Frys.com Open
Former Augusta State All-American Patrick Reed will be playing in back-to-back PGA Tour events.
Reed, who made it through a qualifier for this week’s event in Las Vegas, which starts today, has received a sponsor exemption into next week’s Frys.com Open in San Martin, Calif.
Reed has already played in nine tour events, making the cut in six of them.
Fall Shootout set for Gordon Park
Gordon Park Speedway will play host to its Fall Shootout on Saturday, featuring the Southern Outlaw Super Street Series.
The winner of the street series event will pocket $1,500.
There will also be Crate Late Model and Stk V8 racing.
The driver’s meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., with racing to follow.

Djokovic easily makes quarters
In Beijing, two-time champion Novak Djokovic reached the China Open quarterfinals after dismissing Carlos Berlocq 6-1, 6-3.
Djokovic rushed through the first set then lost his serve twice in the second before winning the second-round match.
Djokovic, champion in 2009 and 2010 in his only previous appearances in Beijing, faces Jurgen Melzer on Friday after he defeated Alexandr Dolgopolov 7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-1.
