Ironman of the Day: Brian Killips

IRONMAN OF THE DAY

NAME: Brian Killips

AGE: 34

FROM: Augusta

OCCUPATION: Evans High School teacher, head boys varsity soccer coach

EXPERIENCE: This will mark his third Ironman 70.3 Augusta appearance.

GAME PLAN: A former basketball player, Killips became a “weekend warrior” after graduating from college. When he began his coaching career, he soon found himself out of breath when he tried to run.

“I didn’t want to be that coach who sits down while my players are running,” he said.

Killips is hopeful this year’s event goes better than the one in 2011 when he battled through a stomach bug, threw up during the bike ride and struggled to finish. A member of Team in Training, Killips said he’d like to finish in the 6-hour, 6-hour, 30-minute range.

“I’ve eased off my training a bit,” he said. “I’m hoping I’ll be more relaxed and will have a much easier race this year.”
