Robinson trails by one after 66

In Wallace, N.C., David Robinson is one shot off the lead after the opening round of the eGolf Tour’s River Landing Open.

Robinson, of Sandersville, Ga., shot 6-under-par 66. He trails co-leaders Brian Duncan, a former Clemson golfer, and former Georgia Tech golfer Chesson Hadley.

Three golfers shot 67, including Aiken’s Stephen Poole and former Clemson golfer Corbin Mills.

Of other area players in the field, Mitch Krywulycz and Rob Bennett had 69s, Henrik Norlander had 71, Scott Usher shot 73 and Brad Arrington had 78.

• In Little Rock, Ark., Augustans Dykes Harbin and Lee Knox shot over-par rounds in the first round of the Southern Amateur.

Harbin, a South Carolina golfer, had 73 and Knox, who plays at Alabama and won the Georgia Amateur Championship on Sunday, shot 75.

Georgia Tech sophomore Oliver Schniederjans and Georgia All-American junior Keith Mitchell each shot 4-under-par 68s to lead the way at Chenal Country Club.

• Augusta’s Greyson Sigg and Emmanuel Kountakis, of Martinez, are on the Georgia team for this week’s 37th annual Georgia-South Carolina Junior Challenge Match.

The two-day matches start Friday at Cuscowilla in Eatonton, Ga.

In addition to Sigg and Kountakis, the other members of the Georgia team are Adam Wright, of Marietta; Brandon Lee, of Alpharetta; Harry Lambert, of Suwanee; Christopher Guglielmo, of Cumming; Tye Waller, of Griffin; and Jack Larkin Jr., of Atlanta.

Georgia leads the series 22-13-1.

No one from the area is on the South Carolina team.

• In Palm Beach Gardens, Ga., Eunice Yi, of Evans, of Megan Sabol, of Martinez, will play in the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort & Spa.

Sabol, who is the girls 13-14 age group, will play Saturday through Monday.

Yi, in the girls 15-18 age group, will play July 26-29.

Basketball

English guard to join Lady Pacers

England’s Michelle Turner has signed to play for USC Aiken.

The 5-foot-7 point guard played her high school ball at Barking Abbey in London, and played her club ball for the Haringey Angels.

Turner is currently a member of the U18 England National Team. Her team is playing in the European Championships this month and August in Macedonia.

Auto Racing

Full slate is set for Swainsboro

Swainsboro Raceway will have seven divisions of racing Friday night, highlighted by Super Late Models, where the winner will earn $5,300.

The other divisions are 440’s extreme concrete, road warrior, pure stock, mini stock, super street and late models. Gates open at 5 p.m. Bogging and racing start at 7 .

Pittsburgh set to join ACC in 2013

Pittsburgh’s bitter breakup with the Big East finally has an official separation date.

Pitt and the conference announced Wednesday that the school will pay $7.5 million to join Syracuse in leaving the Big East for the Atlantic Coast Conference on July 1, 2013. The Big East reached a similar deal with Syracuse earlier this week.

• Miami kicked senior safety Ray-Ray Armstrong off the football team, and said it would give him a full release should he decide to transfer.
