Tourists starter handles Jackets
In Asheville, N.C., Alex Gillingham pitched a five-hitter as the Asheville Tourists stopped the slumping Augusta GreenJackets 6-1 on Friday night.
Gillingham (3-3) struck out eight batters. He got plenty of support from William Swanner, Tyler Massey and Taylor Featherston, who all hit homers.
Augusta scored its run in the sixth on a single by Shawn Payne, who had two of Augusta’s hits. Joseph Staley also had two hits for the GreenJackets, who have lost six of their past seven games and are now 22-31.
Floyd misses cut in his pro debut
In Hawkinsville, Ga., Taylor Floyd missed the cut by a shot in his professional debut despite being 4-under-par for 36 holes.
The former Augusta State golfer shot his second consecutive 2-under 70 in the in the NGA Tour’s ComSouth Classic at Southern Hills Golf Club.
Floyd, who opened the first round with four consecutive birdies, opened Friday with a bogey. He would make three birdies, but still came up a shot short of making the weekend.
Leroux Ferreira shot 61 with a bogey to take the lead at 18-under 126. Zac Radford, who has shot 64-64, is two shots back.
• In Conover, N.C., former British Amateur champion Drew Weaver is tied for the lead after three rounds of the eGolf Tour’s HMG Hotels Classic at Rock Barn.
Weaver, a former Virginia Tech golfer who won the British Amateur in 2007, shot 3-under-par 69 and shares the lead with former South Carolina golfer George Bryan IV, who had 71. They are at 12-under 204.
Of the area golfers to make the cut, Major Manning leads the way. He’s tied for 16th place at 209 after 72 on Friday. Mitch Krywulycz shot 72 and is at 213 and Rob Bennett had 77 and is at 217.
• In Thomson, Mark Ernyei begins the defense of his senior division title in the Camellia Classic today at Belle Meade Country Club.
Ernyei is the only defending champion in the field. Doug Weiss, who won the regular division title last year, isn’t entered.
Jeff Pope, who has won three of his past four starts in the regular division, is the favorite.
Ernyei’s competition in the senior division of the Regions Bank Amateur Series event includes Kenny Larry.
Larry, who is off to a slow start this season, has 19 senior division victories but has never won this tournament.
Ex-Pacer Carmon named to team
Former USC Aiken shortstop Stephen Carmon has been named to the College Baseball Lineup Division II All-Star Team.
The team consists of 30 student-athletes from across the nation, with at least one player from each Division II baseball conference.
Carmon ended his senior year in a Pacers uniform by being named a Tino Martinez Award semifinalist, a ABCA second team All-Region selection and a NCBWA All-Region Honorable Mention choice.
Carmon hit .348 and led the Peach Belt Conference with 45 stolen bases last season. He finished in the top five in the country in that category.
Sooners pitcher fans 16 in win
In Oklahoma City, Keilani Ricketts allowed two hits and struck out 16 as No. 4 Oklahoma upset top-seeded California 3-0 in the Women’s College World Series.
