Floyd comes out firing in debut
In Hawkinsville, Ga., former Augusta State golfer Taylor Floyd birdied his first four holes as a professional and ended up shooting 2-under-par 70 in the NGA Tour’s ComSouth Classic on Thursday.
Floyd, who started his round on No. 10 at Southern Hills Golf Club, shot 4-under 32 on the side. He had 2-over 38 on the front side with one birdie, one bogey and a double bogey.
He’s tied for 57th place, seven shots behind leader Cedric Scott. The top 47 and ties after today’s second round will make the cut.
• In Conover, N.C., former South Carolina golfer George Bryan IV shot 6-under-par 66 to take a one-shot lead in the eGolf Tour’s HMG Hotels Classic at Rock Barn.
Bryan is at 11-under 133.
First-round leader Stefan Wiedergruen had 68 and is in second place.
Bryan’s brother Wesley had 68 and is in a group two shots back.
Major Manning continues to lead the Augusta-area golfers. He shot 69 and is at 137. Rob Bennett had 70 and is at 140 and Mitch Krywulycz had 71 for 141.
Missing the cut, which fell at 142, were Stephen Poole (74 for 144) and Henrik Norlander (73 for 151).
• Former area resident Meechai Padung has signed a national letter of intent to play for Augusta State.
Padung, from Bangkok, Thailand, won a pair of events as a junior, including the 2012 IMGJGT at Founders tournament .
A graduate of the IMG Pendleton School in Bradenton, Fla., Padung lived in the Augusta area for five years as a student at the Jones Creek Golf Club Academy.
• In Covington, Ga., former Evans resident Ashlan Ramsey tied for fifth in an 18-hole qualifier and earned a spot in the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links later this month.
Ramsey, who now lives in Milledgeville, Ga., shot 73 at the Oaks Course.
The U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links will be played June 18-23 in Nashanic Station, N.J.

Asheville’s duo torment Augusta
In Asheville, N.C., Delta Cleary Jr. and Samuel Mende had three RBI each as the Asheville Tourists beat the Augusta GreenJackets 11-3 on Thursday night.
Ben Thomas and Mark Minicozzi had two hits each for Augusta, which has lost five of its past six games and is 22-30.
Fox Creek star Wanninger signs
Fox Creek’s Ashlyn Wanninger has signed with Florence-Darlington Technical College to play softball.
Wanninger hit .457 with 49 runs scored and 20 RBI this past season as Fox Creek won the District IV title.
Wanninger’s team finished 21-10 and was one of the last four teams competing for the Class A Upper State championship.
Former Patriot earns gold glove
Westside High School graduate Chandler Hall, now a starting pitcher for Armstrong Atlantic State, earned a spot on the 2012 NCAA Division II Gold Glove Team.
Sled exhibition set for Sunday
A Sled hockey exhibition featuring veterans and Wounded Warriors will be held at Augusta Ice Sports Center on Sunday.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to noon.
