Lady Jags make move in regional

In State College, Pa., Augusta State rebounded from a poor opening round in the NCAA East Regional behind Natalie Wille and Casey Kennedy, who both had under-par rounds.

The Lady Jaguars shaved 15 shots off their first round score, shooting 8-over-par 296 on Friday.

Wille shot 3-under-par 69 and Kennedy had 71. The other counters were Kirsty Rands with 77 and Marit Bjerke with 79. Christine Duschek-Hansen had the non-counting score of 80.

Wille, who opened with 75, is tied for fourth, four behind Texas A&M’s Katerina Ruzickova (67-73).

The Lady Jaguars moved up from a tie for 18th place to a tie for 13th place in the 23-team tournament.

The top eight finishers after today’s final round advance to the NCAA Division II Championships. The Lady Jaguars are eight shots behind eighth-place team, Washington.

South Carolina is the overall leader. The Lady Gamecocks are seven shots in front of Alabama.

• In Port St. Lucie, Fla., Fayetteville State has a 13-shot lead after shooting 300 in the first round of the Division II portion of the PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.

Lincoln University is in second place. Paine College is in fifth plage, tied with Winston Salem State at 41 shots off the pace set by Fayetteville State.

Pacers avenge loss to Falcons

In Columbus, Ga., USC Aiken starter Derek Beasley went seven strong innings as the Pacers beat Montevallo 7-5 in an elimination game in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.

Beasley (9-4), of Harlem, gave up two hits and three runs while striking out 10 Falcons.

The victory avenges a 6-5 10-inning loss to Montevallo in the Pacers’ tournament opener.

USC Aiken (36-17) faces tournament unbeaten Lander at 4 p.m. today.

Stephen Carmon had three hits, including two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI for the Pacers.

Nick Aranas had two hits and two RBI.

• In Athens, Ga., senior left-handeder Michael Roth tossed seven-plus scoreless innings as South Carolina blanked Georgia 3-0.

Relievers Tyler Webb and Matt Price preserved the shutout.

The Gamecocks are now 38-12 and 17-8 in the Southeastern Conference; Georgia is 28-22 and 12-13.

• In Charlottesville, Va., Virginia scored an unearned run in the eighth inning to beat Georgia Tech 6-5 and halt the Yellow Jackets’ four-game winning streak.

Georgia Tech is 30-20 overall and 10-15 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

• In Statesboro, Ga., Jordan Smith hurled a five-hitter as Western Carolina blanked Georgia Southern 4-0. The Eagles are 26-24 and 12-13 in the Southern Conference.

Westside duo is college bound

Westside wrestlers TreVontay Rhodes and Jaylen Rhoney have signed with Campbellsville University in Kentucky.

Rhodes won the Class AAA state title at 160 pounds this year while Rhoney came in sixth at 170 pounds.

Horse Racing

Dullahan won’t run in Preakness

The owners of third-place Kentucky Derby finisher Dullahan say the colt won’t be running in the Preakness Stakes on May 19.

Donegal Racing managing partner Jerry Crawford says Friday that Dullahan will run next in the Belmont Stakes, the final leg of the Triple Crown races, on June 9.
