North Augustan, partner win title
In Okatie, S.C., the team of North Augusta’s Bob Rickman and Orangeburg’s Bob Varn shot 2-under-par 70 on Wednesday to win the South Carolina Golf Association’s 19th annual Senior Four Ball Championship by one stroke at Callawassie Island Club.
Rickman and Varn had four birdies and two bogeys on Wednesday after opening with a tournament-low 65 on Tuesday.
The teams of Walter Odiorne and Bernie Shealy, both of Columbia, and Gene Spencer, of Blythewood, and Mike Weiner, of Kiawah Island, tied for second at 136. Odiorne and Shealy shot 66 on Wednesday, the low round of the day, while Spencer and Weiner shot 69.
• Former Augusta State golfer Mitch Krywulycz shot 6-under-66 on Wednesday and is tied for fourth place after the eGolf Tour’s Irish Creek Classic.
The tournament is being played at The Club at Irish Creek in Kannapolis, N.C., and Cabarrus Country Club in Concord, N.C.
Seamus Power, a native of Waterford, Ireland, who lives in Charlotte, N.C., shot 62 and leads by two strokes.
Aiken’s Stephen Poole opened with 69. Henrik Norlander, a former college teammate of Krywulycz’s, shot 70, along with ex-USC Aiken golfer Scott Usher. David Robinson, of Sandersville, Ga., had 71. Rob Bennett, of Augusta, and Alex Hamilton, of Aiken, shot 72.
Wolves snap win streak by Pacers
In Newberry, S.C., Newberry scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a tie and held on to beat 10th-ranked USC Aiken 7-6 on Wednesday, ending the Pacers’ five-game winning streak.
Josh Miller went 3 for 5 with an RBI for the Pacers (20-7), while former Thomson standout Will Tankersley homered.
• Paine College swept a doubleheader from Shaw, winning 8-0 and 9-6 to extends its winning streak to five and improve to 13-11.
• In Columbia, Konstantine Diamaduros’ RBI single in the top of the 11th gave Wofford a 5-4 victory over South Carolina.
Mac Doyle drove in four runs for the Terriers (9-12).
Christian Walker knocked in two runs for the Gamecocks (16-5).
• In Greenville, S.C., Mike Dunster went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBI as Clemson beat Elon 4-2 at Fluor Field to give coach Jack Leggett his 1,200th career win.
Lady Pacers post third win in a row
In Misenheimer, N.C., the USC Aiken women earned their third consecutive win, defeating Pfeiffer 7-2 on Wednesday in a nonconference match.
Gina Kothari and Julie Maline didn’t drop a game in winning their matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles, respectively, for the Lady Pacers (7-4).
Paine’s Kennedy honored by SIAC
Paine College pitcher Simone Kennedy was named East Division Pitcher of the Week by the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Kennedy earned wins against Lane and LeMoyne-Owen and struck out 23 in 34⅔ innings.
Manchester City defeats Chelsea
In Manchester, England, Carlos Tevez played in his first game since Sept. 27 and set up Samir Nasri’s late go-ahead goal, giving Manchester City a 2-1 comeback win against Chelsea.
