Dogwood Stable retires Aikenite

Aikenite, Dogwood Sta­ble’s multiple graded stakes winner. has been retired and will be offered for stud duty, Dog­wood president W. Coth­ran Campbell announced Monday.

“After a winter break in Aiken, he went back into training, but complications with his ankle made a 2012 campaign unrealistic,” Campbell said in a news release. “He has done quite a bit for us, and it is time for stallion duty for the 5-year-old son of Yes It’s True and the Saint Ballado mare Silverlado.”

Aikenite ran 23 times with five wins, four second-place finishes and three thirds. His grades takes earnings were $866,635.

Trained by Todd Pletcher, he won as a 2-year-old at Saratoga. He then ran third in the G-1 Hopeful and second in the G-1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland.

Aikenite won the G-2 Com­mon­­wealth at Keene­land, and the G-2 Churchill Downs Stakes in 2011, both at seven furlongs.

Aikenite will remain at Pletcher’s barn at Palm Meadows Training Center.


USC Aiken sits in 11th at Bobcat

In Eatonton, Ga., USC Aiken posted a 36-hole total of 12-over-par 572 and is tied for 11th at the Bobcat Inter­col­legiate.

The Pacers had 285 in the first round and closed with 287 at Cuscowilla Golf Resort. They are 18 shots behind Barry (274-280–554).

Matt Adkins (67-70–137) led the way for the Pacers and is tied for 11th in the individual standings.

Also counting for USC Aiken, Hayden Letien (70-74–144) is tied for 32nd, J.P. Solis (75-71–146) is tied for 45th, Taylor Welborn (76-72–148) and Andrew Ward (73-76–149).

Playing only as an individual, Gaines Milliner (73-73–146) is tied for 45th.

Barry’s Marcus Segerstrom (65-66–131) has a three-shot lead heading into today’s final round.

• Southern Wesleyan posted 17-over 305 to take a big lead at the Paine College Invitational at Jones Creek Golf Club.

The Warriors lead by 21 shots over Morehouse in the four-team, 36-hole tournament.

Paine had a total of 64-over 352 and is fourth.

The Lions counted scores from Carlos Solis (78), Vitor Tapia (81), Patrick Mobley (91) and Pat Lillis (102).

Southern Wesleyan’s David Brown (74) leads the individual standings by two shots over teammate Matt Blackwell.

USC Aiken moved into the top 10 in the latest Collegiate Baseball Division II poll.

The Pacers, who have won four in a row, moved up four spots to No. 10.

Ex-Lions coach joins Wilson Hall

Former Augusta Christian football coach Bruce Lane will become the head coach at Wilson Hall.

Lane, who has spent the past three seasons at Fort Bend Christian Academy in Texas, had a 63-22 record in seven season with the Lions.


Jordanian given two-year ban

Jordanian swimmer Nazih Samer Mezayek was banned for two years after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

FINA said the Jordan Swimming Federation imposed the ban to run through Sept. 9, 2013. Mezayek tested positive for nandrolone in an out-of-competition test in September.
