Paine’s season ended by Miles

In Atlanta, the Paine College women saw their season come to an end against Miles College.

Courtney English scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds as the Golden Bears beat the Lady Lions 60-53 in the first round of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tourna­ment on Tuesday.

Ariel Brown had 17 points to lead Paine (6-21). Quandra Rodgers added 14 points and Kiara Farley had 10.

Charlesia Norman added 16 points for Miles (16-11).

• USC Aiken men’s coach Vince Alexander was named the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Pacers to the regular-season title.

Augusta State’s Devon Wright-Nelson garnered freshman of the year honors. He was also named to the league’s second team.

USC Aiken guard Sterling Council was named to the first team. Pacer teammate Re’mon Nelson made the third team.

USC Aiken’s Hannah DeGraffinreed and Kayla Harris were named to the women’s first team.

Lander’s Jasmine Judge (Hephzibah) and Ciara Lyons (Glenn Hills) were named to the second team.

Jags runner-up at Charleston event

In Hollywood, S.C., the Augusta State men finished second in their second event of the spring season.

The two-time defending national champions closed with 2-over-par 290 on Tuesday to finish with a 5-under 859 total, 15 shots behind Florida at the Charleston Shootout.

Taylor Floyd (69-72-71–212) took fifth place individually to lead Augusta State. He finished at 4-under, six shots behind champion TJ Vogel (69-65-76–206), of Florida, at the Links at Stono Ferry.

Also for Augusta State, Robin Petersson (70-69-74–213) was sixth, Brendan Gillins (73-75-72–220) tied for 17th, Alex Wennstam (70-78-75–223) tied for 26th, Derek Chang (72-72-82–226) tied for 33rd and Shawn Yim (77-81-73–231) tied for 58th.

Former Richmond Academy star William Sigg (74-72-74–220), playing for Presbyterian, finished tied for 17th.

Augusta State will next play in the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Shootout on March 5-6 at Aiken’s Palmetto Golf Club.

• In Kiawah Island, S.C., the Augusta State women posted a final-round total of 7-over 295, capping a 22-stroke victory at the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.

The Lady Jaguars ended the three-day tournament at 13-over 877 at Cougar Point.

Christine Duschek-Hansen (72-72-71–215) finished second individually to lead Augusta State. She was one shot behind Fanny Cnops (72-71-71–214), of UNC Greensboro.

Also for the Lady Jags, Natalie Wille (69-77-71–217) tied for third, Casey Kennedy (70-75-79–224) tied for 12th, Kirsty Rands (75-76-77–228) tied for 31st, Marit Bjerke (80-73-76–229) tied for 38th.

Georgia blanks Savannah State

In Athens, Ga., Kevin Ruiz drove in two runs to lead Georgia (8-0) to a 5-0 victory over Savannah State (3-5).

• In Columbia, Joey Pankake homered to lead South Carolina (7-0) to a 2-1 victory over winless Presbyterian (0-8).

NFL

Season will open on a Wednesday

The NFL will kick off its season on Wednesday, Sept. 5 instead of the traditional Thursday night start to avoid a conflict with a scheduled speech by President Obama on Sept. 6 at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
