USC Aiken splits twin bill in PBC

In Aiken, USC Aiken split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader with Georgia College & State on Saturday, losing the opener 7-5 and winning the nightcap 5-1.

In Game 1, the Pacers’ Tyler Bourdo, a former Evans player, had three hits. Nick Aranas also had three hits for USC Aiken in Game 2.

• In Greenwood, S.C., Augusta State romped to its first Peach Belt Conference victory of the season against Lander, then was on the receiving end in the nightcap of the doubleheader.

The Jaguars (6-8, 1-4)won the opener 13-3 and lost the second game 11-1.

Caleb Saggus, Kevin Dodson, Justin Thigpen and Justin Appel all had two RBI in the first game. Seth Foster had the Augusta RBI in the second game.

• In Athens, Ga., Peter Verdin’s eighth-inning RBI single gave ninth-ranked Georgia a 2-1 win over Winthrop on at Foley Field,

• In Atlanta, Ohio State jumped out to an early lead and beat No. 10 Georgia Tech, 7-3.

Mott Hyde doubled and drove in a run for the Yellow Jackets, who had won five in a row.

• In Clemson, Spencer Kieboom and Phil Pohl had homers as No. 16 Clemson beat Maine 9-5.

Softball

Jags open event with 1-1 record

In Greenville, Tenn., Augusta State split their two games on Day 1 of the Pioneer Classic.

The Lady Jaguars lost to Charleston 3-2 in their first game, then beat host Tusculum 2-0 in the nightcap.

• In Florence, S.C., USC Aiken opened its Peach Belt Conference schedule with a doubleheader loss to Francis Marion.

The previously unbeaten Pacers (6-2 overall) lost 5-2 and 4-2.

Golf

Naegel prevails in eGolf finale

In Okatie, S.C., former Missouri Baptist golfer Chris Naegel closed with 4-under-par 68 to win the eGolf Tour’s Oldfield Open and pocket the $25,000 first-place check in the second event of the year.

Naegel, who lives in Chesterfield, N.C., finished at 13-under 273.

Finishing second, three shots back, was Todd Gator (68).

David Robinson was the top local. He tied for ninth place after a final-round 74 gave him 283.

Stephen Poole (72 for 286) tied for 20th, Henrik Norlander (74 for 289) tied for 35th, Mitch Krywulycz (75 for 292) tied for 48th and Scott Usher (76 for 294) tied for 54th.

Radwanska wins the title in Dubai

In Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Agnieszka Radwanska won her eighth career WTA title, defeating Julia Goerges 7-5, 6-4 in the Dubai Tennis Championships final.

Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best No. 5 when the world rankings are released Monday.

The fifth-seeded Radwanska led in both sets but it took her almost 2 hours to overcome the unseeded Goerges.

• In Marselle, France, Juan Martin Del Potro defeated top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 6-7 (9), 6-3 in an Open 13 semifinal.

Del Potro will face 2010 champion Michael Llodra.

• In Nashville, Tenn., Jurgen Melzer continued his amazing run with a broken right big toe by beating Radek Stepanek 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships.

Melzer ousted top seed John Isner in straight sets to reach the semifinals.
