Pacers sweep conference foe

In Aiken, USC Aiken opened up its Peach Belt Conference season with a doubleheader sweep of Montevallo.

The Pacers (7-1 overall) won the opener 4-2 on Ty Barkell’s two-run single in the seventh inning.

USC Aiken took the nightcap 12-3 as Josh Miller had a homer and four RBI.

The teams close out the series with a noon game today.

• In Rock Hill, S.C., No. 9 Georgia Tech split a pair of games in the Rock Hill Coca-Cola Classic.

The Yellow Jackets lost to Kent State 5-0 in the first game and beat host Winthrop by the same score in the night cap, limiting the Eagles to one hit.

In the opener, Kent State’s George Roberts had three hits and two RBI.

In the second game, Georgia Tech starter Matt Grimes went seven innings, striking out seven.

• In Athens, Ga., No. 11 Georgia stopped Presbyterian 6-1 behind starter Alex Wood.

Wood gave up one run in six innings of work and struck out seven.

Kyle Farmer had two RBI.

• In Clemson, S.C., Alabama-Birmingham’s Dillon Napoleon pitched seven strong innings as the Blazers edged No. 16 Clemson 2-1 in the season opener for both teams.

It was the first time Clemson had lost a season opener since 2004, and it came before 5,944 fans at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

Clemson scored its run in the second inning on Spencer Kieboom’s double.

• Augusta State’s home game with Flagler today will start at noon instead of 1 p.m.

• Armstrong Atlantic State University sophomore catcher/designated hitter Clayton Miller, a former Lakeside player, has been named the Peach Belt Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Miller hit .583 with nine RBI in last weekend’s sweep of Concord.

Lady Jags drop pair in Alabama

In Decatur, Ala., lack of offensive production led to a pair of Augusta State losses in the Charger Chillout Tournament at Alabama-Huntsville.

The Lady Jaguars combined for eight hits in the two games, losing 4-3 to Missouri-St. Louis and 2-0 to Barry University.

In the loss to Missouri-St. Louis, Augusta had five hits with Molly Walton getting two of them. Lauren Yeargan had a two-run double.

The Lady Jaguars had three hits in the loss to Barry.

Augusta State is now 5-3.

Golf

eGolf opener has big crowd at top

In Hilton Head Island, S.C., former Alabama-Birmingham golfer Zach Sucher shot 2-under-par 70 to lead the eGolf Tour’s tightly-contested season opener.

Five golfers are one shot behind Sucher, who is at 9-under 207 through three rounds, in the Palmetto Hall Championship.

Alex Hamilton is the top local player entering the final round. He’s tied for 19th place after 74 left him at 212.

Stephen Poole (71 for 215) is tied for 34th, David Robinson (76) and Scott Usher (73) are tied for 39th at 216 and Kyle Bradley (75) is tied for 53rd place at 219.

Patriots’ Qadir signs his letter

Westside’s Jamal Qadir has signed a national letter of intent to play for Albany State.

The defensive lineman was a four-year starter for the Patriots.
