Paine splits pair at Albany State
In Albany, Ga., Paine College dropped below the .500 mark after losing 91-79 to Albany State on Thursday night.
The Lions, who trailed 50-38 at halftime, are now 12-11, 11-10 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Mario Jordan had 16 points to lead Paine.
Albany State improved to 11-13 and 10-12.
In the women’s game, Quandra Rodgers had 15 points and BreAsia Burns and Brittany Pevey each had 10 rebounds to lead Paine to a 69-66 victory.
The Lady Lions improved to 4-19 and 4-15.
April Thomas and Symone Wilkerson each had 15 points for Albany State (8-16, 8-12).
• USC Aiken’s men’s team has been tabbed third in the first NCAA Division II Southeast Region Rankings of the season.
The rankings are used to determine the region participants from the Southeast Region for the 2012 NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship.
Spurrier to meet with NCAA today
South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and 10 other university coaches, leaders and officials will be in Los Angeles this weekend to appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions. The meetings start today.
The NCAA says the school received $55,000 in improper benefits for athletes – mostly football players– who stayed at a hotel for a reduced rate and for South Carolina’s involvement with a mentoring group in Delaware.
Jags’ coach gets job in St. Cloud
Augusta State pitching coach Augie Rodriguez has been named field manager for St. Cloud (Minn.) of the Northwoods League.
The Northwoods League is a summer baseball league comprised of teams of the top college players from across the nation and North America.
All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid, which preserves their NCAA eligibility.
Rodriguez, in his third year with the Jaguars, will return to St. Cloud after being the pitching coach there last season. His staff led the league in combined ERA (3.21).
• Because of the threat of inclement weather, USC Aiken has moved its Peach Belt Conference-opening three-game series with Montevallo today and Saturday.
The three-game set will now begin with a doubleheader today, starting at noon.
The final game will start at noon Saturday.
Gregory to coach Palmer Cup team
Former Augusta State head coach Josh Gregory, who is in his first season as head coach at Southern Methodist University, has been named as coach for the U.S. team in the 2012 Palmer Cup.
The annual Ryder Cup-style competition will be played June 28-30 at Royal County Down Golf Club in Newcastle, Northern Ireland.
Georgia Tech’s Christian Newton will serve as Gregory’s assistant.
• Armstrong Atlantic State senior Matt Motes, a former Augusta Christian golfer, has been named the Peach Belt Conference’s Men’s Golfer of the Week.
Last week, Motes notched his fourth top-10 finish in the five tournaments, shooting 69-75-70 to finish sixth in the Matlock Collegiate Classic.
