Lady Jags fifth at Onion Creek

In Austin, Texas, the Augusta State women posted rounds of 297 and 293 Monday to open the Challenge at Onion Creek.

The Lady Jaguars are in fifth place at 30-over 590.

Augusta State junior Natalie Wille had rounds of even-par 70 and 73 and is tied for sixth and only four shots out of the lead.

Gabriella Dominguez, of Texas Tech, and Michigan’s Linda Luo are tied for the lead at 1-under 139.

Christine Duschek-Hansen (73-74) is tied for 12th and Casey Kennedy (74-75) is tied for 18th. Junior Marit Bjerke bounced back from a first-round 80 with 71 in the afternoon and is tied for 27th. Kirsty Rands shot rounds of 81-77 and is 58th.

Texas Tech holds the overall lead by three shots.

• USC Aiken moved up two spots to No. 15 in the Golf World/Nike Division II Coaches’ Poll.

Lynn holds the top spot with Barry second and West Florida third.

Local rivals meet in PBC tourney

Augusta State and USC Aiken will square off in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Volleyball Tournament at Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The fifth-seeded Jaguars and the fourth-seeded Pacers will meet in the night’s final match, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

In earlier matches, No. 7 Montevallo will face No. 2 Flagler at 1 p.m.; No. 6 Francis Marion plays No. 3 UNC Pembroke at 3; and No. 8 Lander takes on No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic State at 5.

• USC Aiken senior Troy Watson was named to the Peach Belt Conference Men’s Soccer All-Tournament Team.

Watson had two shots in the Pacers’ loss to eventual champion Flagler.

Bruins cruise to third win in row

In Boston, Nathan Horton had two goals and an assist, and Tuukka Rask stopped 24 shots to earn his first win of the season and lead the Boston Bruins to a 6-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

The win pulled the defending Stanley Cup champions out of last place in the Eastern Conference. The have won three in a row for the first time this season.

Evgeni Nabokov allowed three goals on 12 shots before he was pulled just 12:40 into the game. Al Montoya went the rest of the way and made 21 saves for the Islanders.

New York pulled the goalie down 5-2 with 4:02 left, and David Krejci scored an empty-netter with 2:48 to play.

• Anaheim Ducks enforcer George Parros will be out for four weeks after having laser eye surgery to fix a torn retina.

Mississippi State opens with win

In Starkille, Miss., Dee Bost scored 23 points, Arnett Moultrie added 13 points and 10 rebounds and Mississippi State beat Eastern Kentucky 76-66 in the opening round of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.

• In New York, Nurideen Lindsey scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half to lead St. John’s to 74-59 victory over William & Mary.

Verdasco knocks off Cilic in Paris

In Paris, Fernando Verdasco rallied past Marin Cilic 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to reach the second round of the Paris Masters.

Julien Benneteau, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Kevin Anderson, and Philipp Kohlschreiber and Florian Mayer also advanced.
