EXPERIENCE: This will be Smith’s first year competing in an Ironman event, but he has participated in several other cycling races, including a 390-mile, six-day competition in North Carolina.

GAME PLAN: Smith, who suffered a stroke while in the Army, first discovered cycling at a Paralympics sports camp and has been hooked ever since.

“I can’t run,” he said. “But when I first started to ride that bike, it felt like I was running again.”
