Augusta State wins pair in tournament

In Carrollton, Ga., Augusta State won a pair of games to open the West Georgia Tournament on Friday. The Lady Jaguars beat Florida Southern 6-5 before knocking off Nova Southeastern 4-2.

In the first game, Kaitlin Harris went 3 for 3 with a home run and three RBI for the Lady Jaguars (15-5).

Harris added two RBI in the second game.

- In Florence, S.C., USC Aiken split a doubleheader with Francis Marion on Thursday, dropping the first game 1-0 and winning the second 2-0.

Brittany Williamson had two hits in the first game and Lauren Locker had a pair in the second game for the Lady Pacers (11-6, 2-3 Peach Belt).

College Baseball

Seminoles hold off Bulldogs late rally

In Athens, Ga., Florida State withstood a five-run ninth-inning rally to hang on for a 6-5 win over Georgia (2-7).

Mike McGee and Jayce Boyd homered for the Seminoles (9-0).

- In Atlanta, Georgia Tech dominated a doubleheader against Rutgers (4-4), winning the first game 10-0 and the second 9-5.

The Yellow Jackets (7-4) combined for 29 hits.

- In Statesboro, Ga., Matt Murray threw five shutout innings in relief to earn the win in Georgia Southern's 4-3 victory over St. John's (3-4). The Eagles are 7-3.

High School Basketball

Irmo boys capture Class AAAA crown

In Columbia, Jordan Roper scored 24 points and Irmo (27-3) won its first South Carolina state championship in 16 years with a 79-70 victory over Ridge View (20-8) in the Class AAAA boys' basketball state championship.

- Asia Dozier scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half and Spring Valley (29-0) avenged last year's loss in the Class AAAA girls state championship with a 41-35 victory over Goose Creek (28-3).

Eagles ousted from SoCon Tournament

In Chattanooga, Tenn., Donald Sims scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half to lead Appalachian State (16-14) over Georgia Southern 65-57 in the opening round of the Southern Conference Tournament.

Ben Drayton had 16 points to lead Georgia Southern (5-27).

United States, Chile tied up in Davis Cup

In Santiago, Chile, the United States split its Davis Cup matches against Chile, with Andy Roddick taking the opener and John Isner losing a five-set marathon to Paul Capdeville .

Capdeville, ranked 165th, gave Chile a big lift in the first round by rallying against Isner and winning 6-7 (5), 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Roddick opened with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over Nicolas Massu , the 2004 Olympic gold medalist in singles and doubles.

- Because of inclement weather, USC Aiken's women's match at Montevallo, scheduled for today, has been rescheduled for April 5.

U.S. women reach Algarve Cup final

In Vila Real de San Antonio, Portugal, Lindsay Tarpley scored in the first half, Carli Lloyd added a goal in the second and the United States advanced to the Algarve Cup final with a 2-0 victory over Norway on Friday.

Tarpley scored in the 33rd minute and Lloyd doubled the lead in the 63rd.

Horse Racing

Breeders' Cup CEO leaves organization

Breeders' Cup chief executive officer Greg Avioli has resigned.

Avioli is leaving the organization after five years as the head of the group behind horse racing's biggest event to take a job with a new racing and gaming company.

Breeders' Cup chairman Bill Farish says the search for Avioli's replacement will begin immediately.
