Hamilton, Robinson 1 shot off the lead

In Pine Mountain, Ga., Aiken's Alex Hamilton and David Robinson , of Sandersville, Ga., are off to strong starts in a PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament first stage event at Callaway Gardens.

Both opened with 5-under-par 67s and are one shot off the lead shared by four golfers.

The top 21 finishers after the 72 holes advance to the second stage.

Of the other players with area ties, Major Manning had 68 and is tied for 13th place; Jay Haas Jr. had 70 and is tied for 25th; Cortland Lowe had 71 and is tied for 34th; Adam McKenney had 72 and is tied for 43rd; Jordan Johnstun had 73 and is tied for 54th; Scott Parel had 74 and is tied for 62nd; and Hugh Royer III had 76 and is 68th.

- Hall Thompson , the founder of Shoal Creek Country Club in suburban Birmingham, Ala., whose comments about the admission of blacks created a stir before the 1990 PGA Championship at the course, has died.

Club president Bob Luckie said in a statement that the 87-year-old Thompson, who was an Augusta National Golf Club member, died Wednesday morning.

Pacers picked over Jaguars in PBC poll

USC Aiken's men's basketball team was chosen to win the 2010-11 Peach Belt Conference, according to the preseason coaches poll released Wednesday.

USC Aiken received 10 first-place votes to finish ahead of rival Augusta State. Clayton State is third in the preseason poll followed by Georgia College and State in fourth and Armstrong Atlantic State in fifth.

Coaches were not permitted to rank their own teams.

It is the second time in three seasons that USC Aiken has been picked as the preseason favorite.

USC Aiken begins the season ranked No. 11 by the Division II Bulletin. The 2010 conference tournament champions, the Pacers return seven letter winners from last year's team.

USC Aiken volleyball wins its 7th in a row

In Newberry, S.C., USC Aiken's volleyball team stretched its consecutive winning streak to seven with a 3-1 victory over Newberry College.

The Pacers (14-11) were led by Shannon Byers , who had a match-high 12 kills.

- In Aiken, the USC Aiken women's soccer team tied Georgia College and State 1-1 to end its season winless in league play.

The Pacers end their 2010 campaign with a final record of 5-11-2 overall and 0-8-2 in the Peach Belt Conference.

- In Columbia, Wardlaw Academy swept Coastal Christian 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-20) on Monday in the SCISA 1-A state championship match to win their fourth consecutive state title.

The Lady Patriots were led by Peyton Baynham , who had with 31 assists, five aces and one block.

Horse Racing

Unbeaten Zenyatta to take on the boys

Zenyatta will put her 19-0 record on the line when she defends her title in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, going against the boys for the second consecutive year.

A record total of 184 horses, including 26 from overseas, were pre-entered Wednesday for the $26 million, 14-race Breeders' Cup world championships at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 5-6. That tops last year's total of 166 and betters the old mark of 180 set two years ago.
